I’m an independent video journalist and documentary filmmaker in Taiwan, where I’ve lived since 2007.

My areas of interest are human rights, national defense in Taiwan, and the fight against misinformation or malign influence.

Two of my ongoing documentary projects are about Taiwanese activists fighting to save their democracy from foreign interference, and the other is an examination the social impact of Taiwan’s unique “criminal adultery” law.

I also have a fully shot documentary chronicling Taiwan’s marriage equality movement from referendum to realization, for which I am seeking post-production support.

The NYT Investigations team tracked the tanker, Ever Grandeur, to a point outside Kaohsiung’s shipping port. Myself, Paul and Elise were on the ground to get images of the ship before it left the area. I booked a small yacht and filmed from the boat while Elise piloted her drone. The ship disappeared as soon as this piece went public.

The Homemade Guns of Taiwan, Vice World News 2021, Produced by Michael Saul Garber and Elise Coker

My reflections on the making of the film:
Producing The Homemade Guns of Taiwan was the most challenging and rewarding documentary I’ve had the privilege to make. When Elise Coker pitched the idea in 2020, I said “That’s going to require a lot of hiking.” It did, but more than anything else it required the trust of Indigenous communities in central and eastern Taiwan, and support of Indigenous activists who have spent years campaigning for their rights.

Any documentarian who wishes to follow Taiwanese indigenous activists, hunters, artists, or communities must be prepared to demonstrate their integrity to the community’s satisfaction. Quick productions that only seek to exploit Indigenous traditions for spectacle are not welcome.
